Discovering Wynwood
00:15Art has always been something that has piqued my interest and something to which I offer infinite fascination and appreciation. That is why, while I was in Florida I was more than stoked when an instagram friend recommended me to visit the Wynwood Walls. Ofcourse being the master procrastinator that I am, I only found the time to post about it now but here I go anyway :)
The Wynwood Walls is located at 2520 NW 2nd Avenue, Miami however when we went there we had a private car so I don't really know what bus to take to get there from Downtown Miami. You can always look it up or use Google maps to get there. Not a whole lot of people know about the place (I asked a couple of people who lived in Miami their entire lives and they had no idea where the place was, shocking I know) so it's important to look it up first to avoid wasting time, money and effort. Also, getting lost.
Let's go ahead, shall we?
Inside the Walls:
Main entrance! It actually took us a few minutes to ask around where the entrance was but it was no bother, not when you're already surrounded by so much artworks and colorful shops even outside the walls! Best part? It's totally free. No entrance fee whatsoever.
First two artworks to welcome you inside the Walls. The second one is a personal favorite done by an American artist hailing from New York named Swoon. She completed the work in 2014 prominently featuring an image of a mother breastfeeding her child to which the artist calls "Gemma and Dawn". The lavish mural spans panoramically an entire wall completing Swoon's second contribution to the Wynwood collection.

My lovely companion during the Wynwood's trip, Ate Angel ♥ |
This floral installation was done by a French artist named Fafi in participation with the Women on the Walls program for Art Basel wayback 2013. With so many visitors coming in day and night, some of the flowers have already fell off but it still provides such a sight to admire and ofcourse take photos of ;)
Two of my absolute favorites! First one was done by LA based artist Retna whose calligraphic murals are inspired by varied cultures that transcends time. He describes his delicate brush strokes as peace of mind and you don't need to fully decipher his letters to appreciate the intricacy of his art. The second featured mural is done by another female artist, Maya Hayuk. Maya incorporates the psychedelic ambiance visually through her symmetrical compositions and exuberant colors. Both of which, I truly loved!
Aside from the murals a few works by Peter Tunsey were also up for display. I'll let the artwork speak for themselves :)
I just loved this! |
Outside The Walls:
Since me and Ate Angel visited the Walls at around 3 to 4 pm we didn't really have much time to roam around the entire 5 block community to see all the artworks (plus, it was scorching hot even for Miami!) However, we did have a glimpse of some of them during the busride back to Downtown Miami. Credits to the owners of the photos featured below :)

Can you believe that this photorealistic masterpiece was done with spray cans? Nope? Well, neither can I. Credits: thewynwoodwalls |

What makes WW even greater? The staggering amount of female artists! This one was created by another brilliant femme all the way from South Africa. Faith47 has contributed numerous art pieces in different parts of Wynwood alongside her husband Dal East. Talk about legit #relationshipgoals. amirite? PC: thewynwoodwalls |

Yes, even the streets were not spared. |
Nope, not even the electric meters!!! :) |
A few heads up!
- Visiting at night is not recommended not only because finding a parking spot is horrible but because WW is located in quite a dodgy area and it might not be safe for looming tourists. However, day visits are totally safe just refrain from bringing valuable items and always be on a look out (which is a given in any new place you travel to)
- If you're sorta kinda in the hipster crowd or just interested to witness a swarm of them, visit on the weekends because there's definitely gonna be heaps of hippies. From insanely colored hair to extravagant outfits, you name it - they're there.
- Don't just focus on the murals within the walls but roam around the entire 5 block area and immerse yourself in different varieties and textures of graffiti, installations and so much more! If you're in luck you might catch the artists themselves polishing up their artworks. Totally awe inspiring!
- Go ahead and check out the shops, gnarly restaurants and breweries all around. They sell all your hippie necessities and even if you're not into that stuff there is still heaps of really cool things that may tickle your fancy ;)
- Have fun! Seriously have fun and immerse yourself in a world of color by so many brilliant artists of different varieties. Let the floodgates of creativity burst out, take photos or just admire from your very own eyes. Art is subjective and with so many to marvel out it is truly impossible not to find something that connects with you!
Before ending this post I'd like to give a massive shoutout to Ate Angel for generously accompanying me during the trip and for patiently taking photos with me. I miss you ate and I cannot wait to see you soon in Cebu. I love you!! xx
All the best,
Mae xx
