“You would if you couldn’t bring yourself to take your own life. There are many people like
that out there, Sarai. Ready to die, but afraid to do it themselves.”
Sweet merciful book gods, thank you for JA Redmerski.
Wow! Just wow. JA Redmerski, you have done it again woman.
After giving us The Edge of Never, Killing Sarai is another book that EVERYONE should definitely grab and read.
I basically devoured the entire 393 pages in just a span of 5 hours, maybe even less if I didn't stop way too much to take a breather from such a thrilling read.
We follow the story of a strong yet damaged young woman named Sarai. At the age of 14 her mother gave her away to a Mexican drug lord named Javier who has developed an obsessive liking towards her. 9 years, that's how long she has been held captive in the confines of Javier's compound where she has been forced into a sexual relationship with the said man. Sarai finally caught a chance for freedom when Victor, a hired assassin and an equally dangerous man, visits the compound for some special mission that deals with Javier Ruiz. She sneaks out of the compound and into Victor's vehicle not knowing that she may have escaped the clutches of one dangerous man but has now placed her fate in another man's lethal clutches.
She is exposed to Victor's world of violence but as scary as it gets she feels safe with him there.
Victor struggles with his own judgments and finds himself getting protective of Sarai. Knowing that in his line of work getting attached to a person can only mean trouble, he pushes whatever he feels for Sarai in the backseat and focuses in keeping her alive from the people who wants her dead. This is their story.

Both of the main characters are very well written. Hallelujah for another strong female character that didn't get on my nerves!! Sarai showed raw emotions which was definitely understandable given all the shit that she has been dealt with for majority of her life. The trauma, the abuse, the deaths, all these violence that she has grown accustomed to did not break her defenses rather it made her numb and adaptive to the dangerous circumstances that she was forced to live with. It did not only make her strong but lethal altogether.
"I am discipline. Sarai is rage. I am aware of my choices at all times. Sarai’s choices are more aware of her, lying in wait to decide for her based on the severity of her mood with no intention in leaving her any conscious control over it."
Victor, talk about bad-ass swoon worthy assassin 101. Like Sarai, he grew up knowing nothing but death and violence and danger. He is a lean, mean, killing machine (literally!). Being cold hearted and just apathetic at the very first chapters of the book, I waited patiently for Sarai to crack his chilly facade and breaks loose the emotions he's been hiding for so many years by necessity.

"I will do everything in my power to keep you safe, but it's not a guarantee because no matter how much you trust me, you should never, under any circumstances trust anyone fully. In the end, you can only trust yourself. I am not your hero. I am not the other half of your soul who could never let anything bad ever happen to you. Trust your instincts first always, and me, if you choose, last"
I do love how the author didn't jump into the whole relationship bandwagon on this one.
Yes, the constant sexual tension killed me but it didn't happen instantly. The whole thing grew and grew and grew in each chapter until it explodes and blows you away!! I sure felt my heart burn from all the tension. EVERY SCENE IS FREAKING INTENSE. ;)
"We sit in stillness, both looking out ahead, both married to our thoughts. I wonder if hers are about me. I can't help but for mine to be about her"
"What have you done to me?" he asks.
"I was going to ask you the same question".
"I was going to ask you the same question".
The story grips you from the very first page and you have no other choice but to tear through it!
Thrilling, gripping and absolutely amazing - Killing Sarai will surely leave you wanting for more.
Definitely one of the best I've read this year.
